FAQ
When is the best time to visit Xinjiang?
June – September: Ideal for grasslands, lakes and flower fields. July – August is the peak season with large crowds and high accommodation prices.
May – June & September – October: Fewer tourists, stunning scenery and great value for money. Highly recommended.
November – March: Spectacular snow-capped mountains, ski resorts and ice waterfalls, perfect for skiing enthusiasts.
Duku Highway: Open from early June to early October; closed for the rest of the year.
Which one should you choose for your first trip to Xinjiang: Northern Xinjiang or Southern Xinjiang?
Northern Xinjiang (Kanas, Hemu, Sayram Lake, Ili): Dominated by natural scenery, ideal for first-time visitors.
Southern Xinjiang (Kashgar, Taxkorgan, Hotan): Features cultural landscapes, ancient towns and plateau views, perfect for in-depth travel.
Outfits & Weather (Experiencing four seasons in one day)
Daytime: Short-sleeve top + sun protection jacket + quick-dry pants.
Mornings, evenings and mountain areas: Light down jacket or windbreaker. (Nighttime temperatures in Kanas and Sayram Lake can drop to 5–10°C.)
Footwear: Hiking shoes or sneakers. High heels are not recommended.
Sun protection: The ultraviolet rays are extremely strong. Use SPF50+ sunscreen, and prepare sunglasses, sun hats, cooling arm sleeves and face masks. Sunburn can still occur even on cloudy days.
Dry climate: Bring lip balm, moisturizer and nasal spray. Drink plenty of water and eat more fruits to prevent nosebleeds and dry, itchy skin.
What should we pay attention to about local food?
The local diet mainly features beef, mutton and noodles, with rich and oily flavors.
In halal restaurants: Do not bring pork or alcohol inside, and never ask if pork is served.
The food may easily cause internal heat. Bring digestive tablets and vitamins. Local fruits taste sweet, but do not overeat to avoid diarrhea.
Is Xinjiang safe?
It is extremely safe here. There are strict security checks and sound public order with ample police forces in towns and cities.
Avoid traveling alone to remote towns or desert areas late at night.
What medicines should we bring?
Motion sickness pills, gastrointestinal medicine, cold medicine, fever reducers, painkillers, vitamins and throat lozenges.
Bring insect repellent for grasslands and mountain areas. Pack lip balm and moisturizer for the dry climate.
Do we need to tip?
There is no mandatory tipping culture. You may tip voluntarily for good service, within 10% of the bill.
What should be noted when entering a mosque?
Dress code: Women shall wear long trousers or long dresses with shoulders and backs fully covered. Men are not allowed to wear shorts.
Take off your shoes before entering the main hall, keep quiet and do not take photos unless there are signs permitting photography.
What should we pay attention to when communicating with ethnic minorities?
Respect local customs and avoid sensitive topics. Mandarin is widely spoken in Northern Xinjiang. Some elderly people in Southern Xinjiang only speak Uyghur, so you can communicate with simple gestures and translation apps.
How is the mobile phone signal and network coverage here?
4G and 5G networks work well in cities and counties. Signals are weak or unavailable in mountainous areas, grasslands and no-man's lands. Download offline maps in advance and carry some cash.
Which areas in Xinjiang require a border pass?
Baihaba Village in Kanas, Taxkorgan County, Khunjerab Port, the Pamir Plateau, and some border areas of Zhaosu.
Starting from April 15, 2026, electronic border passes will be adopted, and paper ones will no longer be valid.
How do foreigners apply for a border pass?
Location: Exit-Entry Halls of Public Security Bureaus in Urumqi and Kashgar (free of charge).
Required Documents: Original passport plus copy, visa page, two 1-inch white-background photos, and travel itinerary.
Group Application (More Convenient): Applications can be processed by travel agencies. It is recommended to apply 15 to 30 days in advance during peak seasons.
Restrictions: Certain border areas (e.g., Khunjerab) are only accessible for group tours. Individual applications are not accepted.
Are there areas in Xinjiang that are off-limits to foreigners?
❌ Military zones, sentry posts and unopened border lines: No approaching or photography is allowed.
❌ Some remote villages and restricted areas at ports (including parts of Khorgos Port) are not open to the public.
✅ Regular scenic spots (Kanas, Hemu, Sayram Lake, Narat and Kashgar Ancient City) are open for normal visits.
